Join us on Vashon Island this summer to learn and create Batik with Pomegranate Batik artist, An-Magrith Erlandsen.
This is a 2 day workshop starting Saturday August 2nd, 1-5 pm each day.
Classes are held in the outdoor courtyard at Mind Set Apothecary on Vashon Island!
We will learn to paint with beeswax on fabric using traditional Tjanting tools, and paintbrushes. I will provide tea towels and T-shirts but please feel free to bring your own fabric and apparel as well - fabric should be 95-100% cotton, linen, hemp, silk or rayon as we will be using Procion dyes.
We will do one layer of wax on our tea towels and one dye bath that we will boil out on Sunday. Our other items we will add a second layer on Sunday and a second dye bath and you will have the skills to boil it out at home once the dye has set.
Our first dye on Saturday we will submerge our items in a Procion dye bath for 15-30 minutes before "batching" sealing our item in a plastic bag to set for twelve hours before rinsing and line drying in time for the next day's class. You may take your batch home, rinse and line dry it, or I can do it for you.
On Sunday we will continue a double layer of wax on some of our items, another dye bath and boil the wax out of our one layer items and enjoy the amazing, surprising and always satisfying batik art that we have created!
This class involves working with hot wax, permanent dyes and boiling water. Apron or coverup is recommended. I will provide disposable gloves.
Note that we do not paint with dye but work with the "submersion" method of dying our batik - soaking our entire item in a bucket of dye after wax application.
You will discover the results are surprisingly fabulous!
