Participate in a small eclectic group on Vashon Island this summer to learn and create Batik with Pomegranate Batik artist, An-Magrith Erlandsen.

This is a 3 day workshop starting Friday August 1st, 1-5 pm each day.

We will be meeting at Mind Set Apothecary on Vashon Island, with classes held in their cozy courtyard in the back. www.mindsetapothecary.com

We will learn to paint with beeswax on fabric using traditional Tjanting tools, and paintbrushes. We will begin on small pieces of fabric, move to designing tea towels, scarves and t-shirts.

Feel free to bring your own fabric and apparel as well - just make sure the fabric is 95-100% cotton, linen, hemp, silk or rayon.

Each class ends with us submerging our items in a Procion dye bath for 15-30 minutes before "batching" sealing our item in a plastic bag to set for twelve hours before rinsing and line drying in time for the next day's class. You may take your batch home, rinse and line dry or I can do it for you. Just remember to bring it back the next day for the second layer of wax and second dye bath!

On the last day we will boil the wax out of our items and enjoy the amazing, surprising and always satisfying batik art that we have created!

Be aware this class involves working with hot wax, permanent dyes and boiling water. Apron or coverup is recommended. I will provide disposable gloves.

Note that we do not paint with dye but work with the "submersion" method of dying our batik - soaking our entire item in a bucket of dye after wax application. The results are always surprisingly fabulous!
